1. PHONE A FRIEND: Us girls, or guys tend to stick together! This is a great way to find suggestions on who to go to for doing your lovely locks. Just make sure you don’t end up looking like your friend! Hair people sometimes get stuck on a certain look…and your style needs to be completely uniquely yours!

2. APPROACH A STRANGER: Don’t be shy! If you see someone that you dig their hair, please ask! They will take it as a compliment, and you will find out some good info!

3. LET YOUR FINGERS DO THE WALKING: Our internet world is so vast! This is such a great way not only for a stylist to let you know what they can do for you, but for you to find a hair specialist! Read their bios, blogs (hello), and testimonials from happy, content people just like you! In all my years of doing hair, I have come to the conclusion that stylists tend to attract the kind of clients that they are (which can be a little wacky)! If in doubt, schedule an appointment for a consultation to see if you can jive happily with your new hair friend!

Not to worry! Here are some solutions for you to win the war against frizz!

1. PRODUCTS: Products are our friends in a bottle! They range from straightening creams and serums for you straight hair girls, to curling sprays, curling creams and gels for us curly girls and guys! The main problem with most people is they don’t use enought of our friends in a bottle. You have to use enough to completely cover your locks from scalp to ends to reduce frizz.

2. RELAXERS: This is probably the least understood and under used product in our arsenal of weaponry against frizz. It is cheaper than a Keratin Straightener, (see below), doesn’t take quite as long to do, amazing results which will make your life a lot easier on a daily basis and fight that frizz! If you haven’t tried it, I think you should!

3. KERATIN STRAIGHTENER: This has gotten a lot of press in the last few years. We at DOUGLAS BROOKE only use the safest of products on our valued guests. This is really the ultimate in successfully straightening the hair as much as we can and still save the condition and integrity of the hair. If done to the max, this service will last about 5 months.

4. BACK TO CURLY: If you have any form of curl from a little bit to a lot, I can help you embrace what nature gave you! As I said before, product makes a HUGE difference, but also the haircut is super, super important! The haircut is our shape, and our shape is our style, and it has to be perfect…so flaunt those curls!!!!!

In that trip, many transitions are happening that will definitely effect the hair  in a negative way. When moving from a colder climate to warmer climate the hair is first of all stressing out because of what the change from Cold to Hot will do. Also, most people that are coming into the Fort Myers area, or the South West Florida area in general, are typically wanting to come down and play! This usually means that they are going to be boating and on the water or they are probably going to be playing golf or tennis. While all of these activities are great, they take a huge toll on the hair. The salt content of the ocean will wreak havoc on your hair. This will remove excessive amounts of your own natural moisture which can lead to seeing split ends faster as well as hair color loss. In playing outdoor sports, you have the aspect of the sun damage and the UV rays that it produces which will also work to dry out the hair as well as creating hair color loss. Along with the UV rays from the sun, one of the largest factors that will negatively effect hair is perspiration. Just like with salt water, the perspiration contains a certain salt content which raises the PH factor for the hair, which in turn can ultimately cause more damage than the UV rays.

So what is the solution? Its actually very simple! First, make sure that you find a qualified Hair Stylist while visiting in South West Florida that you can see every four to five weeks to continue to maintain your hair for you while you are gone. Keeping your hair trimmed at these intervals will actually help to protect against split ends. Second, make sure that your Hair Stylist is recommending, and that you are using, a Salon Professional Shampoo and Conditioner for your hair. I will share later, on another blog, why this so important.

…we also just want to look better than our other relatives. Having the best hair is always noticed in pictures. Well there are a few tricks to getting that perfect HAIR! The first is don’t wait until the last minute. That usually means added stress for everyone involved. Also, you want to have time for your hair to calm down after getting any potential hair color services done. Secondly, ask your hair dresser what is the best thing to do for styling on the day of family photos. Your hair dresser will be able to tell you whether or not it would be better to start that day with clean hair or if your hair would work better as “second day hair“. Lastly, plan to have some time the morning that everyone will be getting together, so you won’t be rushed in trying to get ready for the family picture of the year. Remember, having that perfect Holiday Hair does take some work but it doesn’t have to take all day. If you work with your stylist and plan ahead, you can definitely have the best Holiday Hair in the pictures! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
